How to clean and polish exhaust tips, chrome, stainless steel and aluminium.
How do I clean and polish my exhaust tips?
Let the exhaust cool completely, then wipe away loose soot with an all-purpose cleaner or degreaser and a rag. For baked-on carbon, work in fine steel wool or a dedicated exhaust cleaner such as Mothers Exhaust Tip Cleaner & Polish, keeping the surface lubricated. Apply a small amount of metal polish with a microfibre applicator (or a PowerCone-style cone on a drill for stubborn tips), work it in until the residue turns black, then buff to a shine with a clean, dry microfibre. Repeat on heavily soiled tips.
Can I use the same metal polish on chrome, stainless steel and aluminium?
Not always. Chrome and stainless steel are hard and take a stronger cut, so a chrome polish such as Mothers California Gold Chrome Polish is ideal. Bare aluminium and mag are softer and can haze, so use a polish formulated for them like Mothers Mag & Aluminium. An all-metal polish such as Koch Chemie MEP works across most bright metals. Avoid aggressive metal polishes on anodised, painted or ceramic-coated finishes, as they will dull the coating.
Is steel wire wool safe to use on exhaust tips?
On solid stainless steel or chrome tips, yes. Fine-grade (0000) wire wool is one of the fastest ways to lift baked-on carbon. Keep it lubricated with polish or cleaner, use light pressure, and follow up with a metal polish to refine the finish. Never use wire wool on soft aluminium, anodised, painted, coated or coloured tips, as it will scratch them. Reach for polish and an applicator pad instead.
Will metal polish remove heat discolouration (blueing) from my tips?
Light heat tint, surface oxidation and yellow or brown staining usually come off with a good metal polish and a little effort. Deep blue or purple blueing, where high heat has penetrated the metal, is harder. Polish will lighten it but may not fully remove it, especially on thinner OEM tips. A couple of passes with a cutting metal polish gives the best result; if it will not shift, the discolouration is in the metal itself.
How do I keep my exhaust tips shiny for longer?
Polishing strips away any protection, so soot re-adheres quickly on a bare tip. After polishing, apply a metal sealant, wax or ceramic coating to leave a slick barrier that resists carbon and makes the next clean far easier. Give the tips a quick wipe at each wash and re-polish every few weeks, or monthly for a daily driver, to stay on top of build-up.
