Frequently asked questions

Do I need a drying aid or can I dry with a microfibre towel alone?
A drying aid creates a micro-layer of slickness between the paint and the towel fibres, so the cloth glides over the surface rather than contacting the clear coat directly. This matters over thousands of weekly washes. A proper drying aid is purely a lubricant. Many products marketed as quick detailers are actually light spray sealants formulated for dry panels and can streak badly when applied to a wet surface.
Should I choose a rinseless wash or a spray sealant as a drying aid?
For maximum lubrication during drying, choose a rinseless wash or dedicated quick detailer over a spray sealant. Rinseless washes and QDs provide more glide and less streak risk. In summer heat, a spray sealant applied to a wet panel is more practical than applying it to a dry one, because dry-panel application fights streaking. CarPro Ech2o at 1:16 dilution and Garage Therapy Rinseless at 1:16 are both confirmed to work well as drying aids.
How do I prime a drying towel before use?
Slightly dampen the towel before your first drying pass. A primed towel collects water faster than a bone-dry one. One practical method is to prime on glass first: glass cannot be marred, and the damp towel then pulls water off paintwork much faster. Alternatively mist the towel with the pressure washer or a drying aid spray to achieve the same primed state.
Why does my drying towel stop absorbing and just push water around?
The usual cause is drying aid or ceramic spray loading the fibres over time. SiO2 products drive protection into the microfibre loops where it survives normal washing, leaving the towel water-repellent. Keep dedicated drying towels separate from cloths used to apply protection, and wash them after every session to prevent build-up. If the towel is already affected, a hot wash at 60 degrees with a dedicated microfibre detergent can restore performance over a few cycles.
What causes water spots and how does drying speed affect them?
A water spot forms when a bead of tap water evaporates on the panel and leaves dissolved minerals behind. The faster you remove the water, the fewer solids bake on. In hard-water UK areas, where tap water TDS can reach 300 to 500 ppm, this is the main reason spots appear even after a clean wash. Getting water off before it dries, using a high-absorbency drying towel and a drying aid, is the most reliable defence.
