Frequently asked questions

What is the best dedicated tyre cleaner?
In a direct face-off test, Dodo Juice Pneu Look is the top dedicated tyre cleaner, with two applications sufficient even on heavily soiled 5-year-old tyres. CarPro ReTyre is rated second, and may need up to three applications on very neglected rubber. Bilt Hamber Surfex HD does a reasonable job but falls behind dedicated tyre cleaners on sidewalls specifically, despite being an excellent wheel cleaner at 1:4 dilution.
Why does my tyre foam turn brown when I scrub it, even though it looks clean?
Brown foam indicates grime and old dressing residue are being lifted. Keep agitating until the foam runs white, which tells you the surface is clean. However, some brown bloom is antiozonant migrating out of the rubber compound itself. Antiozonants are a functional part of the tyre that prevent the rubber from cracking, so do not scrub aggressively to remove every trace. Once the foam runs consistently white, the tyre is clean enough to dress.
Should I spray tyre cleaner onto a wet or dry tyre?
Apply tyre cleaner to a dry tyre rather than pre-rinsing first. Pre-rinsing leaves a water film that dilutes the cleaner the moment it lands, weakening it where you most need the chemical to work. Spray the cleaner onto the dry sidewall, let it dwell, then agitate with a stiff nylon tyre brush and rinse off. No tyre cleaner is truly touchless, even strong alkaline ones at pH 12 to 14 still need brush agitation to lift road film and old dressing.
Do I need a dedicated tyre cleaner every wash, or can I use shampoo?
For routine maintenance washes, a strong-dilution car shampoo is perfectly adequate as a tyre pre-soak. Reserve dedicated tyre cleaners like CarPro ReTyre or Dodo Juice Pneu Look for the initial reset on a neglected car or for a seasonal deep clean. If you are using a conditioning dressing that builds up over multiple applications, such as Garage Therapy Tyre Serum, avoid strong tyre cleaners at every wash as they strip the accumulated layers. Use shampoo on maintenance washes and tyre cleaner only for the deep clean.
Is it safe to use solvents to clean tyre sidewalls?
Tyre manufacturers advise cleaning with detergent only. Solvents, panel wipes, and hydrocarbon degreasers degrade the rubber surface over time. If you need to strip a stubborn old-dressing film, use a milder hydrocarbon cleaner, apply it to a cloth rather than spraying it directly onto the rubber, wipe immediately, and do not leave it to dwell. Scrubbing with a foaming water-based APC and a tyre brush is the preferred method for routine cleaning.
