Fine Cut Polishes

A fine cut finishing polish removes the micro-marring and hazing left behind by a cutting compound or medium polish, bringing the surface to its maximum gloss. Scholl Concepts S40, for example, removes approximately sub-micron to one micron of clear coat per pass on a soft pad, which is near-zero cut. That makes it the correct choice for a final refining pass over already-cut paint, not a stand-alone product on heavily swirled paint.

Only on paint that is already in good condition with fine haze or light spider-web swirling. On heavily swirled or defected paint a fine polish will not remove the deeper marks. Use a medium compound such as S20 Black or S3 Gold XXL to cut first, then the fine polish to refine. For very light post-wash swirling or bug splatter aftermath, an ultra-fine polish such as Scholl S40 or Menzerna SF4500 on a DA polisher is the appropriate choice.

A soft foam finishing pad is the correct choice for an ultra-fine polish. Finishing wool, even the finest grade, gives marginally lower gloss than foam on a sensitive soft clear coat because it retains slightly more cut. For the final refining pass on soft paint, a foam finishing pad paired with an ultra-fine polish delivers the highest possible gloss. Keep the pad just damp rather than dry or wet, as a dry foam pad drags across paint with poor coverage.

A pure finishing polish such as Dodo Juice Critical Finish contains no gloss enhancers, fillers, or oils. What you see after buffing off is the real paint condition. A filler-type polish contains oils that fill swirl marks and add depth temporarily; the improvement partly washes off over time. Before a ceramic coating, always use a pure finishing polish. For a non-coated maintenance polish before a wax, the filler type is acceptable as the wax sits on top of the oils.

Maximum gloss comes from polishing the clear coat flat, not from the LSP applied on top. A good high-gloss cutting compound followed by a slow finishing polish set with a soft pad gets you close to that panel's gloss ceiling. Each clear coat has a physical maximum: one panel may cap at 93 gloss units while another reaches 98. Once you hit the ceiling, more polishing adds nothing. Work in a garage, keep the pad damp, and use slow steady arm speed with 50% overlap per pass.
