A blower earns its place for door mirrors, door handles, grilles, and shut lines where a drying towel cannot reach. Water trapped in these areas drips down the door 10 to 15 minutes after drying and leaves streaks that need a second wipe. For flat bodywork panels a towel is faster. The most practical approach is hybrid: blast the intricate areas with the dryer, then finish the flat panels with a microfibre drying towel.

CFM (cubic feet per minute, the volume of air moved) is the key figure, not mph (air speed). A high-speed low-volume blower is less effective at sweeping water off large flat panels than a high-CFM unit. A blower running at 800 to 880 CFM can dry a full car in approximately four minutes. Units in the 650 CFM class run at around 116 dB. Always use ear protection for sustained blower use.

A blower works best when the paint has protection in place, such as a wax, sealant, or ceramic coating, that makes water bead. On bare unprotected paint, water sits in flat sheets instead of beading and the blower moves it around rather than clearing it. On unprotected paint, use the blower for mirrors and intricate areas and combine it with a microfibre drying towel and a drying aid for the flat panels.

A cordless leaf blower offers more airflow at lower cost than a dedicated car dryer and eliminates cable setup time. Dedicated car dryers such as the Blo Air RS are most justified if you plan to dry an entire vehicle contactlessly every session. For most home detailers who want to clear mirrors, handles, and shut lines before finishing with a towel, a cordless leaf blower is the more practical and cost-effective choice.

Always blow-dry the car in the same spot where it was washed. Standing water on the ground around the car keeps airborne dust suppressed. Moving a wet car onto a dry surface before blowing disturbs dry dust that settles onto the wet paint, adding contamination immediately before the dry.
