Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an alkaline wheel cleaner, a fallout remover, and an acidic wheel cleaner?
Alkaline cleaners (pH 8 or above) saponify grease and road film and suit regular maintenance on modern alloys. Fallout removers (pH around 5.5, slightly acidic) react selectively with iron particles, dissolving the oxide shell around embedded brake dust, and turn purple as they work. Acidic cleaners (pH around 3) break down mineral deposits and baked-on brake dust through acid dissolution, and are most effective on severely neglected wheels or barrel interiors. Using the wrong category for the contamination level either under-cleans or needlessly risks the wheel finish.
Do I need a dedicated wheel cleaner or will an all-purpose cleaner do the job?
For routine maintenance on a car cleaned weekly to monthly without heavy motorway miles, Bilt Hamber Surfex HD at a 1:4 dilution performs at parity with dedicated alkaline wheel cleaners including Koch Chemie Green Star, ValetPRO Bilberry, and Dodo Juice Deep Purple in head-to-head tests. Step up to a fallout remover (such as Bilt Hamber Auto-Wheel) or an acidic cleaner (such as Detail Bug Black Widow) when brake dust is baked in or contamination is heavy.
When should I use an acidic wheel cleaner instead of a fallout remover?
Try a quality fallout remover first. If it does not shift the contamination, step up to an acidic wheel cleaner. When brake dust is heavily baked in, an acidic pre-soak (3-minute dwell, then rinse, then contact wash) outperforms even the strongest alkaline cleaners. Acidic cleaners are only necessary on neglected wheels; maintained cars washed regularly do not need acid. They are safe on satin and diamond-cut alloys, but avoid them on anodised wheel centres and satin finishes that explicitly warn against low-pH chemistry.
Is it safe to use a strong wheel cleaner on diamond-cut or matte alloys?
Diamond-cut alloys that are already showing lacquer lifting or corrosion should be cleaned with a milder product rather than a strong acid or fallout remover, since aggressive chemistry accelerates existing corrosion. Bilt Hamber Auto-Wheel is a suitable option for dirty diamond-cut wheels that need more than routine shampoo. Satin-finish alloys and anodised wheel centres must not be cleaned with caustic or strongly alkaline chemicals, which can permanently haze the finish. Use a diluted citrus cleaner at around 1:10 to 1:20 on these finishes instead.
Does a wheel cleaner need agitation, or will it clean the wheel on its own?
No wheel cleaner is truly touchless. Even iron-removing fallout cleaners, which chemically dissolve embedded particles, still need brush agitation to lift the surrounding road film and brake dust that the chemistry alone cannot shift. Spray the cleaner, let it dwell without allowing it to dry (mist more product if it starts to dry), then agitate with a brush before rinsing. Always apply to a cool wheel surface, as a hot wheel causes the product to flash-dry before it can react.
