Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a trim dressing and a trim coating, and which lasts longer?
Trim dressings are water-based or solvent-based products that sit on the surface and typically last 1 to 4 weeks before washing off. Trim coatings (such as Gyeon Q2 Trim EVO or CarPro DLUX) chemically bond to the plastic and last 1 to 2 years in normal use. For anyone washing their car regularly, a coating saves more time over a year than repeated dressing applications, despite the higher upfront prep time.
How do I get an even, streak-free finish when applying a trim dressing?
Spray the dressing into the applicator pad rather than directly onto the surface. Apply lightly across the trim, aiming for a subtle sheen rather than a wet look. Finish by going over the area with a clean microfibre glass cloth to even out the product and pick up any excess. Thick, wet-looking applications reveal every missed spot when sunlight hits and build up dust over time.
Does trim dressing on faded exterior plastic actually restore the colour, or just cover it?
A trim dressing or coating darkens the plastic and restores a uniform appearance, but how well it works depends on preparation. The trim must be cleaned and fully dried first, including any moisture in panel gaps. On significantly faded trim, applying a second coat of a ceramic trim coating produces a noticeably better result because the first coat is partly absorbed into the depleted plastic. Products like Infinity Wax Plasti Coat give 2 to 3 months on a daily-driven car and do not streak when it rains.
Is it safe to use a trim dressing on rubber door seals?
Yes. A conditioning tyre or rubber dressing such as Garage Therapy Tyre Serum is well suited to door and boot rubber seals. It hydrates the rubber and reduces the cracking and hardening caused by UV exposure, in the same way it conditions tyre sidewalls. Applying it at every spring deep clean at minimum helps prevent long-term seal deterioration.
How should I prepare plastic trim before applying a ceramic trim coating?
Clean the trim with an all-purpose cleaner (such as Surfex HD at 1:10) and agitate with a detailing brush. Rinse and dry completely, using a heat gun or car dryer to remove moisture from gaps and recesses. Then wipe the surface with a panel prep solution (such as Gyeon Prep) to strip any remaining oil or silicone. Skipping the panel prep step is the most common cause of poor bonding on ceramic trim coatings.
