Frequently asked questions

How long does a ceramic coating last?
It depends on the product tier, how well the surface was prepped, and how the car is maintained afterwards. Entry-level spray ceramics give several months of protection. Bottled prosumer coatings from brands like Gyeon and CarPro are manufacturer-rated at roughly 2 to 4 years, and two-coat professional systems like Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light with EXO are rated at 3 to 5 years. Manufacturer figures come from controlled testing and real-world results vary with climate, mileage, and wash habits.
Is a ceramic coating worth it?
For most cars that get used regularly, yes. The main payoff is easier washing. A coated car sheds road film more readily, which means less scrubbing on each wash and less risk of wash-marring over time. Ceramic coating is the right choice if you want longer-lasting protection with less frequent re-application compared to wax or sealant.
Can you apply a ceramic coating yourself at home?
Yes, with the right prep. The paint needs to be fully decontaminated (iron remover, clay), free of any polish oils (panel wipe), and applied indoors at a moderate temperature around 5 to 25 degrees Celsius. Get those right and a prosumer bottled coating from Gyeon, CarPro, or Gtechniq will bond correctly and give professional-level results.
What is the difference between SiO2 and graphene ceramic coatings?
SiO2 (silicon dioxide) coatings chemically bond to the clear coat and form a hard, smooth surface layer. Graphene coatings use graphene oxide in place of some or all of the SiO2. The difference often cited is that graphene is marketed as running cooler on the panel in direct sunlight, which can reduce the risk of water-spot etching on a hot surface. Both provide water beading and easier cleaning, and formulation quality matters more than which compound is on the label.
How much does a ceramic coating cost?
Entry-level spray ceramics start from around 10 pounds. Bottled prosumer coatings from brands like Gyeon and CarPro typically run from about 30 to 90 pounds, and full professional kits like Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light with EXO start around 95 pounds. Prep products like iron remover, clay and panel wipe are a separate cost if you do not already have them.
How do you maintain a ceramic-coated car?
Use a pH-neutral shampoo for routine washes and avoid TFRs, heavy-duty degreasers and wax-stripping products. Top up every couple of months with a spray sealant such as Gyeon WetCoat or Gtechniq C2 to keep the water beading strong. If beading drops off noticeably, a decontamination wash with an iron remover and a decon shampoo will usually restore it without re-coating.
