Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a water-based and a solvent-based tyre dressing?
Water-based dressings (such as CarPro PERL or Yum Dress V2) give a matte to satin finish, last roughly 1 to 3 weeks, and are easier to re-apply without stripping the previous coat. Solvent-based dressings (such as CarPro DarkSide) give a deeper, glossier look and typically last 3 to 6 weeks, but are more prone to slinging onto paintwork if the tyre is not properly cleaned first. Pick water-based for regular maintenance or a show finish; pick solvent-based when you want maximum durability between washes.
How do I stop tyre dressing from slinging onto my paintwork?
Tyre sling is almost always a prep failure rather than a product problem. If the rubber is not degreased, or you apply fresh dressing on top of an old layer, the product cannot bond and just sits on the surface, flicking off as the wheel turns. Clean the tyre first with a dedicated tyre cleaner, scrub until the foam runs white rather than brown, let the tyre dry fully, and then dress it. With thick gel dressings, apply liberally and wipe back the excess after 20 minutes to remove any product sitting in the tyre grooves.
Should I apply tyre dressing to a wet or dry tyre?
Dry the tyre thoroughly before applying most dressings. Use a car blower or leaf blower to blast water from the tread blocks, then wipe the sidewall with a microfibre towel. Water sitting in the tread dilutes the dressing and causes uneven application. The exception is Gyeon Tire Express, which is formulated to be applied to a wet tyre, making it a useful option when fully drying the sidewall is not practical.
How do I choose between a gel, cream, or spray tyre dressing?
Gel dressings (thicker consistency) attract dirt faster and can be messy to apply, but work on most sidewalls. Cream dressings suit smooth sidewalls and apply cleanly with a brush or foam applicator. Spray and liquid dressings penetrate more evenly into heavily grooved sidewalls, such as those on Michelin Primacy or SUV tyres, because the liquid flows into the texture rather than sitting on top. Brush applicators suit creams best; foam applicators work well with both cream and spray formats and are easier to clean.
How often should I strip the tyre back and start fresh rather than just re-dressing?
Every 2 to 3 months on a regular-mileage car. Over time, accumulated dressing layers and browning reach a point where new product no longer penetrates cleanly. The reset method is to apply a tar and residue remover (such as Yum Tar and Residue Remover) to the sidewall, agitate with a microfibre towel, rinse, and rebuild with multiple thin layers of dressing. The first post-strip application absorbs quickly and the result is noticeably better than dressing over old residue.
