Say the name Mothers to most detailers and California Gold wax is what comes to mind, the paste tin that has been sitting on garage shelves for decades. That is not actually what is stocked here. The Mothers range at CA Detailing sits on the other side of the brand entirely: a metal polish lineup built for wheels, trim and exhaust tips, and a newer CMX ceramic system aimed at buyers who want a coating without a full correction first. Two very different jobs under one badge, and worth understanding separately rather than assuming either one behaves like the wax everyone already knows. We will cover what each side actually does, including a full year of real-world tracking on how the CMX primer polish holds up under a ceramic coating.
The seven products in this range split cleanly into two jobs that have almost nothing to do with each other.
Neither side needs the other to work, so pick based on what you are actually trying to do to the car, not because both carry the same name.
This is the more straightforward half of the range, and the part closer to what the brand is historically known for. Four products, each aimed at a specific metal job rather than being a single do-everything polish.
We will be honest about the limits of what we can say here: none of this side of the range has been through the kind of tracked, long-term testing the CMX system has. What we know about it comes from the products themselves and established metal-polishing practice, not a documented test we can point to.

This is the side of the range with real testing behind it, and it runs as a genuine three-stage workflow rather than three unrelated products sharing a name.
The 3-in-1 Polish & Coat is the properly unusual product here. It is applied with a DA polisher on a medium-cut pad, spread over roughly double the area you would normally cover with a real polish, and buffed off within about fifteen minutes before it hardens. What it leaves behind is a layer of acrylic fillers that the ceramic coating bonds to, working more like a controlled glaze than a correction step.
That should be a problem. Fillers sitting between the paint and a ceramic coating are normally exactly what stops a coating bonding and lasting properly, which is why panel wipe exists as a step in the first place. A full year of tracking the same bonnet, half coated over the CMX primer, half without, through repeated alkaline pre-washes and strong contact washes, found no measurable difference in bonding or hydrophobic performance between the two halves. The primer did not degrade the coating's ability to bond or last, which is not what you would expect from a filler-based product sitting under a ceramic layer.
Use this system if the paint only has light marring and you want a coating without booking in a full correction. Skip it if the car has genuine deeper scratches, in that case a proper compound-and-polish correction still does a job this system is not designed to replace.
CMX Ceramic Surface Prep is formulated to strip an existing wax or light sealant along with polishing oils, leaving the paint ready to bond. It will not remove a durable modern sealant or an existing ceramic coating on its own, those still need machine polishing to come off properly, panel wipe products of any kind only ever remove oils and light residue, never a cured coating or a proper sealant.
