Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a compound and a polish?
A compound contains coarser abrasives designed to cut through deeper defects such as heavy swirl marks, scratches, and oxidation. A polish uses finer abrasives to refine the surface after compounding, or to address lighter defects on their own. Some products, such as Scholl Concepts S20 Black, are formulated to cut and finish in a single stage as a one-step polish.
How do I choose between a one-step polish and a two-step compound-and-polish process?
A one-step polish suits cars where speed matters and a show-quality result is not required, as it always leaves some micro-marring. A two-step process, using a compound to cut and a separate finishing polish to refine, is the approach for the highest gloss and lowest haze. The gloss gap between a good one-step and a two-step is small from a few feet back; the real difference is how many deeper scratches remain.
Can I use a filler polish before applying a ceramic coating?
No. A filler polish such as Dodo Juice Lime Prime contains polishing oils that sit between the paint and the coating, causing the ceramic to fail its bonding check. Before applying a ceramic coating, use a pure, filler-free polish such as Dodo Juice Critical Finish. After polishing, wipe down with a dedicated panel prep spray that contains surfactants, not IPA alone, to lift the polishing oils IPA cannot remove.
What are the best one-step polishes for cut and finish in a single stage?
Koch Chemie F6, Scholl Concepts S20 Black, and Zvizzer MC are well-regarded one-step options. Zvizzer MC has more cut than S20 Black and a longer working time before the product breaks down, giving more control over the correction level. A good default starting combination for an unknown car is a Rupes Yellow foam pad with Scholl Concepts S20 Black: run a test spot first, then step up the polish if correction is insufficient.
How do I know when a cutting compound has stopped working?
Watch the product colour on the pad. When a cutting compound starts white and opaque it is delivering full cut. As you work the set it thins, greasens, and turns translucent. At that point the abrasives have broken down and you are getting diminishing returns on defect removal. The translucent stage still adds some gloss but contributes little further correction, so complete the pass and buff off rather than continuing to work a spent compound.
