Frequently asked questions

What is the correct order of steps in a full decontamination wash?
The recommended sequence is: routine pre-wash and contact wash first to remove loose dirt, then tar remover on dry panels (tar films can encapsulate iron and block the next step), then iron remover (Bilt Hamber Korrosol, CarPro Iron X, Gyeon Iron) with a 5-minute dwell, then a snow-foam or shampoo pass to clear chemical residue, then clay if the paint still feels rough, then a panel wipe, and finally your chosen LSP in the same session.
Does an iron remover strip wax or sealant off the paint?
Yes. An iron fallout remover such as Korrosol or CarPro Iron X breaks down previously applied wax or sealant as a side effect of its chemistry. A practical sign that the LSP has been stripped is that a panel that previously beaded water now sheets freely after rinsing. This makes a fallout remover pass useful even before applying a fresh LSP on a well-maintained car, as it gives the new protection a clean bond.
How do I know whether to clay after a chemical decontamination?
Run your hand over a dried panel after the wash and chemical decon. If it feels silky smooth, claying is not needed and would only abrade the paint for no benefit. If it still feels rough or gritty, clay those sections. Clay the whole car only when the paint genuinely warrants it, not on a fixed annual schedule, as claying is mildly abrasive and introduces marring risk.
Why is a panel wipe needed before applying a ceramic coating or sealant?
After claying, residual clay lube, polish oils, and fingerprints sit on the paint surface. An isopropyl-alcohol-based panel wipe (such as Soft99 Silicone Off) strips these before the LSP goes on. Skipping this step is the most common reason a freshly applied coating beads more weakly than expected, because residue sits between the paint and the protection layer. Work panel by panel as the product flashes off fast.
