Frequently asked questions

What type of brush is best for cleaning intricate alloy wheel spokes?
A flat-face wheel brush with dense, softish bristles is the best choice for alloys with intricate spokes. The compact head pushes into crevices without getting stuck and cleans in a single pass where softer microfibre barrel brushes miss areas. The Vikan flat-face wheel brush is a named example: professional detailers have used the same one for years without notable bristle degradation.
How long do budget wheel brushes last compared to quality ones?
Budget wheel brushes typically last around two months of weekly washing before the bristles degrade and the brush starts scratching wheel surfaces. Investing in quality nylon-bristle brushes such as the EZ Detail range, or a microfibre wheel brush for sensitive gloss-black finishes, pays back quickly through brush longevity and reduced risk of scratching.
Should I rinse the car before using a detailing brush on paintwork?
Yes. Always do a pre-rinse or a snow-foam pre-wash and rinse before using a detailing brush around badges, headlights, taillights, or mirrors. Dragging a brush over a dry panel grinds loose grit collected in crevices straight into the clear coat and causes marring. Pre-rinse first to lift the loose dirt, then agitate with an APC or shampoo as lubrication.
What brush should I use for applying tyre dressing?
A dense nylon-fibre applicator brush is the correct tool for tyre dressing. The key technique is to fully pre-load the brush with product before starting: nylon fibres absorb dressing rather than spreading it until the brush is saturated. An under-loaded brush deposits almost nothing on the first tyre. Once loaded from a previous use it performs well. The CarPro Darkside Brush is a named example that also doubles as a trim applicator.
