Frequently asked questions

Why should I use a dedicated leather cleaner rather than an all-purpose cleaner?
Leather sits on the acidic side of the pH scale, roughly pH 4.5 to 6. Most all-purpose cleaners are high-alkaline, and repeated use of an APC on leather can disturb that pH balance over time. A dedicated leather cleaner is formulated to stay pH-balanced on the acidic side, which protects the hide's structure. On older or aged plastic and vinyl, APC can also attack the finish and cause surface degradation.
What is the best product for cleaning car leather seats?
Koch Chemie Pol Star at 1:20 to 1:10 dilution applied with a microfibre scrubber pad is one of the most effective leather cleaners available. Start at 1:20 for routine cleaning. Move to 1:10 for heavier soiling or first-time cleaning on neglected leather. It also handles Alcantara, plastic trim, and rubber mats in the same session. Do not use it on screens or piano black panels as it leaves residue that is difficult to remove from those surfaces.
Is it safe to use a steam cleaner on leather seats?
Use steam on leather sparingly. Steam can remove the topcoat too easily, and repeated steaming can overheat the leather, causing it to harden and eventually crack. Steam can also saturate leather, which then shrinks when it dries and wears faster. For routine cleaning, a dedicated leather cleaner with light brush agitation is the safer method. Reserve steam for specific stubborn areas and keep exposure brief.
Are magic erasers safe to use on leather?
No. Magic erasers are abrasive and remove or degrade the leather topcoat even when you cannot see the damage happening. The risk is that the surface looks fine immediately after but the leather's lifespan is shortened. Koch Chemie Pol Star at 1:20 requires significantly less rubbing to get the same cleaning result with none of the topcoat risk, making it the better choice for stubborn marks on leather.
Do I need to clean brand-new leather before applying a protectant?
Yes. Factory-fresh leather has invisible smudges and handling residue from manufacturing and transit that won't show under casual lighting but prevent proper adhesion of a leather sealant. Wipe the leather down with an interior cleaner before applying any protectant, even if the leather looks pristine. Gtechniq Tri-Clean is recommended as the prep step before Gtechniq Leather Guard, and it doubles as an antibacterial general-interior cleaner.
