Any dressing or coating applied over dirty or oily trim will bond poorly and produce a patchy or streaky result. Silicone residue from previous dressings is particularly problematic because it forms a barrier that prevents new product from reaching the plastic. Cleaning first with an all-purpose cleaner removes road film, old product, and surface contamination so the new dressing or coating has a clean surface to bond to.

A dilutable all-purpose cleaner (APC) such as Bilt Hamber Surfex HD or Koch Chemie Green Star works well on plastic trim. Dilute to around 1:10, agitate with a detailing brush, then rinse and dry thoroughly. For trim that is going to receive a ceramic coating, follow the APC step with a panel prep wipe (such as Gyeon Prep) to strip any final traces of oil or silicone before coating.

Yes, and this matters more for coatings than for regular dressings. Moisture trapped in panel gaps during application of a ceramic trim coating causes drips and prevents the product from bonding correctly. Use a car dryer or heat gun to dry not just the flat trim surface but also the recesses and joints. For a standard water-based dressing, the trim should at least be surface-dry so the product is not diluted on contact.

Yes. A diluted APC is safe on both interior and exterior plastic, though the contamination type differs. Interior plastics typically carry dust, skin oils, and product build-up from previous dressings. Exterior bumper and trim panels carry road film, UV-baked grime, and silicone residue. Use a lighter dilution on interior surfaces (1:10 or weaker) and apply via a detailing brush rather than spraying directly, to avoid the cleaner reaching upholstery or screens.
