Polishing Pads

Foam pads are the default starting pad for most detailers: soft enough for finishing, available in densities that cover light through to heavy correction, and forgiving on most paint types. Microfibre pads sit between foam and wool, offering a middle-ground compromise of cut and finish. Wool pads cut faster than foam on heavily defected or post-wet-sanded paint but finish poorly on their own and always need a separate finishing pass with a soft foam pad afterwards.

For a DA polisher, foam pads are the right starting point. Rupes Yellow foam and wool pads are a comfortable beginner default, easy to use and forgiving. The Chemical Guys Hex Logic Green pad sits in the middle of the Hex Logic range and makes a good all-round machine-polishing pad for beginners, as the whole Hex Logic range is soft and unlikely to introduce machine haze even on soft paint. For a single-day beginner detail, a foam pad with Scholl Concepts S20 Black is a reliable system.

Polish off a barely damp pad, not a dry or wet one. A dry foam pad drags across paint with poor coverage. Prime the pad, moisten it slightly, and spin out the excess until it is just damp. Spread product across the pad as lines or a smear rather than isolated dots, so the abrasive covers the whole pad face. Never start a set on a pad that looks clean but still holds dried old polish from a previous session, as about 80% of compound dusting is caused by starting on a contaminated pad.

Do not let pads warm up during a set. Heat causes sticking and poor cutting. If a pad is warming, cycle to a fresh one rather than pushing through. Have multiple pads on hand for any single car: at minimum two in the same foam family. Keep spare pads in a bucket of water between sets to prevent polish drying on the foam. Clean pads after each session with a brush tool or APC, rinse, and dry face down on a microfibre towel.

A waffle or cross-hatched pad conforms to body lines and contours more readily than a flat pad because the cut-out sections allow the foam to flex. On a rotary polisher, a waffle pad follows curves with light finger pressure where a flat pad fights the contour and forces you to tilt the machine. Waffle pads also run cooler as the channelled surface allows more airflow, making them a good choice for extended correction sessions or on sensitive paint where heat build-up is a concern.
