What does ShineMate make?
ShineMate is a manufacturer of polishing machines and accessories, and the range we stock centres on their rotary tools: the EP801 G2+ compact rotary polisher and the EP803 rotary polisher kit, plus backing plates such as the 3 inch M14-2 and foam polishing cones for use in a drill. The compact rotaries are the useful part of the line, because a small rotary reaches areas a full-size machine cannot.
Should I use a rotary polisher or a dual action?
A rotary spins the pad on a single axis, which gives maximum cutting power and the fastest correction, but it is far less forgiving: it can burn an edge or leave holograms if your technique slips. A dual action also orbits the pad and stalls under pressure rather than generating that heat, which is why it is the right answer for beginners. Use a rotary if you have experience or need serious correction, and finish with a DA.
What is a compact rotary useful for?
Tight areas and heavy defects in small places: A pillars, door shuts, bumper returns, around badges and lamp surrounds, and localised deeper scratches where you want cutting power without taking a full-size machine to the panel. A three inch backing plate with a small pad concentrates pressure, so it cuts quickly, which is exactly why it needs a light touch. Tape adjacent trim before you start, because there is very little margin at an edge.
Are drill-mounted polishing cones any good?
They have a narrow but real use: small spot work such as around badges, in vents and on trim edges where you want a little cut and do not want to bring out a machine. They are not a substitute for a polisher on a panel, because a drill has no orbital motion and no speed control suited to paint, so the risk of burning through on a flat surface is high. Keep them for detail work.
