What is the difference between a wash mitt and a wash pad?
A wash mitt slips over your hand like a glove, giving full coverage and a secure grip across large panels. A wash pad is a flat, hand-held block of microfibre or foam that offers more control in tight areas and on contours. Both lift grit into a deep pile and away from the paint, and many detailers keep one of each.
Are microfibre wash mitts better than traditional sponges?
Microfibre and chenille wash mitts are generally safer than flat sponges because their long fibres pull grit up and away from the surface, whereas a sponge can trap particles against the paint and cause swirl marks. For modern clear-coat finishes, a deep-pile microfibre mitt or pad is the recommended choice.
How do I use a wash mitt without scratching the paint?
Pre-rinse or snow foam the car first to lift loose grit. Use the two-bucket method, with one bucket of shampoo and one of clean rinse water fitted with a grit guard, and dip the mitt into the rinse bucket between panels. Work from the top down in straight lines, and use a separate mitt for wheels and lower sills.
How should I clean and care for my wash mitt?
Rinse the mitt thoroughly after every use to flush out grit, then machine wash at 30-40°C using a microfibre-safe detergent. Never use fabric softener, as it clogs the fibres and reduces absorbency. Air dry or tumble dry on low. Cared for this way, a quality microfibre mitt will last many washes.
Do I need a separate wash mitt for the wheels?
Yes. Wheels collect brake dust, road grime and metal particles that you never want to transfer to your paintwork. Keep a dedicated wheel mitt or wheel sponge separate from your bodywork mitt, and ideally use a separate wash bucket too, to avoid cross-contamination and swirl marks.
