Frequently asked questions

What is the correct order for washing a car safely?
Clean wheels and tyres first as they throw contaminated water and brake dust onto panels. Then apply a pre-wash (snow foam or citrus pre-wash) to the dry bodywork, let it dwell, and pressure rinse. Follow with a contact wash using a clean microfibre mitt and a bucket of shampoo with a grit guard. Work top to bottom, rinse the mitt often, and never bring a dirty mitt back into the soap bucket without rinsing it in the rinse bucket first.
How important is a pre-wash before the contact wash?
The pre-wash is the most important step of the whole wash. Its job is to lift grit and aggregate particles off the paint before any cloth touches the surface. Go in too early with a contact wash and those particles scratch and dull the finish. A thorough pre-wash that leaves the paint 80 to 90% clean before contact removes most of the risk. After a proper pre-wash, even a single bucket with a grit guard is sufficient for the contact wash.
What shampoo should I use for a routine maintenance wash?
A pH-neutral shampoo (pH 6 to 8) is the safe default for any protected paint. It will not strip wax, sealant, or ceramic coating. For hard-water areas, Garage Therapy DMS (a mildly acidic shampoo) is recommended as a routine maintenance wash to counter mineral build-up and prevent water spotting. On soft water, a pure pH-neutral shampoo such as Garage Therapy One is the straightforward pick. Match shampoo choice to your water type, not just brand preference.
Do I need a two-bucket system or will one bucket do?
After a thorough pre-wash that removes most contamination before contact, a single bucket with a grit guard is sufficient. The two-bucket method is a precaution against recontaminating the bucket with dirty rinse water, but that risk is already low once a proper snow foam or citrus pre-wash and rinse has been completed. If you skip the pre-wash entirely, two buckets are still advisable.
What causes swirl marks during a car wash and how do I avoid them?
Swirl marks are caused by dragging grit across the paint during the contact wash. The single biggest preventative measure is pre-washing properly every time, so by the time you make contact the paint already feels clean. Use a clean microfibre mitt (not a sponge from a shared bucket), work in straight lines, flip or replace the mitt when it picks up dirt, and never dry the car with a towel if you have skipped the contact wash stage, as the residual film will cause swirling.
