What is the difference between an alkaline wheel cleaner, a fallout remover, and an acidic wheel cleaner?
Alkaline cleaners (pH 8 or above) saponify grease and road film and suit regular maintenance on modern alloys. Fallout removers (pH around 5.5, slightly acidic) react selectively with iron particles, dissolving the oxide shell around embedded brake dust, and turn purple as they work. Acidic cleaners (pH around 3) break down mineral deposits and baked-on brake dust through acid dissolution, and are most effective on severely neglected wheels or barrel interiors. Using the wrong category for the contamination level either under-cleans or needlessly risks the wheel finish.
Do I need a dedicated wheel cleaner or will an all-purpose cleaner do the job?

Spray the cleaner, let it dwell without allowing it to dry (mist more product if it starts to dry), then agitate with a brush before rinsing. Always apply to a cool wheel surface, as a hot wheel causes the product to flash-dry before it can react.
