Sonax Profiline Ceramic Coating Glass is a hydrophobic glass sealant for the exterior glass of the vehicle. Water and dirt are repelled rather than clinging, and at motorway speeds the airflow carries the droplets off the screen before the wipers are needed at all. Sonax describe it as the invisible windscreen wiper. It also makes frost and ice noticeably easier to clear in winter. Working the coating into the glass properly is what determines how long it lasts, and Sonax specify polishing the glass with Profiline Glass Polish first so the sealant keys to clean, stripped glass.

How to use

  • Wash the vehicle, then machine polish the glass with Sonax Profiline Glass Polish (02731410) on a felt pad to strip grease, traffic film and car wash residue.
  • Remove the polishing residue with a glass cleaner and a clean microfibre glass cloth. The glass must be perfectly clean and dry.
  • Pour onto a Coating Applicator (02377410) and work it into the glass in a criss cross pattern over sections of about 40x40cm, finishing one window before starting the next.
  • Leave it to react for 45 to 60 minutes at 20 to 25 degrees C.
  • Polish the residue off streak free with a fresh microfibre glass cloth.

Please note: do not touch the glass or let it get wet for 4 hours after buffing, at which point the water repellent effect is fully formed. Fit fresh wiper blades at the same time, and expect the windscreen to need recoating sooner than the side and rear glass because the blades abrade it.

Any glass coating can smear or judder for a short time after application, usually because the blades are worn or the coating has not fully cured. Fit fresh wiper blades when you coat the glass and give it the full 4 hours before driving in rain. Once it has bedded in the wipers should pass quietly, and at speed you will barely need them.

Typically around 6 months on the windscreen and up to 12 months on the side and rear glass. The windscreen wears fastest because the blades abrade the coating on every sweep. These are typical figures from the trade rather than a Sonax published warranty, and working the product intensively into the glass makes a real difference.

Sonax specify polishing the windscreen with Profiline Glass Polish on a machine with a felt pad, then cleaning off the residue. That step strips the bonded grease, traffic film and car wash residue that would otherwise stop the coating keying to the glass. Skipping it is the most common reason a glass coating fails early.

No. This is a sealant for the real glass on the outside of the vehicle, so the windscreen, side windows and rear screen. It is not intended for interior glass, plastic or polycarbonate windows, headlight lenses, paint or wrapped panels. Sonax make other Profiline coatings for plastic and for headlights.
