Why should I apply pre-wash to a dry car rather than rinsing first?
A dry dirt film draws chemical into itself by capillary action, which lets the pre-wash break down and emulsify road grime. Once the surface is already wet, the film is saturated and cannot absorb more liquid, so the product just sits on top and gets wasted. Apply snow foam or citrus pre-wash straight onto the dry dirty car for maximum chemical contact.
When should I use a citrus pre-wash instead of snow foam?
Use a citrus pre-wash when there is a genuine layer of traffic film and road grime, particularly from late autumn through spring. In a direct three-way comparison, citrus removed noticeably more traffic film than snow foam on the same soiled panel. Snow foam is sufficient for lighter summer dust conditions. Garage Therapy Zero Citrus and Shiny Garage Citrus Oil TFR are well-tested options for heavy contamination.
How long should a pre-wash dwell on the paint?
A maximum dwell of 10 minutes is the guideline, with 5 minutes generally adequate on a normally soiled car. In direct sunlight, remove the product earlier to prevent it drying on the panel. Thinner citrus sprays dry faster than foam, so they need closer monitoring on a hot or sunny day.
Can I layer citrus pre-wash and snow foam together?
Yes, and it is the recommended approach on a heavily soiled car. Spray the citrus pre-wash directly onto dry contaminated panels first, then immediately blanket over with snow foam before the citrus has a chance to flash off. The foam acts as a wet film that keeps the underlying citrus from drying out, extending the effective dwell time of both products. Leave 5 to 10 minutes, then pressure rinse.
Does a pre-wash strip my wax or ceramic coating?
It depends on the product. TFR and alkaline pre-washes strip wax and sealants but do not strip a properly cured ceramic coating. A pH-neutral pre-wash such as Bilt Hamber Touch-Less is free-rinsing and LSP-safe at maintenance dilutions of 0.5 to 1% PIR. Save stronger alkaline products like Koch Chemie VB for deep cleans where you intend to reapply protection afterwards.
