When a rotary is the right tool, and how to use one safely.
Is a rotary polisher safe to use?
In experienced hands, yes. A rotary drives the pad in one direction and does not stall, so it cuts faster than any DA, but it also builds heat quickly and will burn through an edge or leave holograms if you dwell in one spot or let the pad sit at an angle. Keep the pad flat, keep it moving, use the lowest speed that does the job and stay off panel edges and sharp body lines. If you are learning, practise on a scrap panel first.
When should I use a rotary instead of a dual action?
Reach for a rotary when the defects are too deep for a DA to clear in sensible time, when you are refining wet sanded paint, or when you are working through volume in a bodyshop and a DA is simply too slow. It is also the tool for hard clear coats that a free spinning DA struggles to bite into. For general swirl removal and finishing on a customer car a DA is safer, and with foam pads the final gloss is virtually identical.
What are holograms and how do I avoid them?
Holograms are the fine three dimensional buffer trails a rotary can leave behind, most obvious in direct sun on dark paint. They come from too much heat, too much speed, a worn or dirty pad, or a compound that has dried out. Avoid them with lighter pressure, lower speed, a pad refreshed often, and a finishing pass on soft foam with a fine polish. Many detailers correct with a rotary and then refine with a DA to guarantee a hologram free finish.
What speed should I run a rotary at?
Most correction sits between 1000 and 1500 RPM. Spread the product at around 600 RPM, correct at 1000 to 1500, then drop back down to refine. Higher speeds generate heat faster than they generate cut, so if the paint is getting hot you are going too fast or leaning on it too hard rather than working too slowly.
Can I use a mini rotary for small areas?
Yes, and it is often the only way to correct pillars, door shuts, badge surrounds and tight radius areas properly.
